Professional Advocacy

The Gerontological Nursing Association of Ontario has a mandate to promote gerontological nursing to the general public through involvement with government, community, and partnerships with other nursing associations (such as the Registered Nurses Association of Ontario, Canadian Gerontological Nursing Association).

Towards this goal, we continue to pursue the following actions:
1.  "Our Stories":  Nurses are encouraged to share their stories of challenges, inspiration, and humorous events for this column, which is printed in Perspectives.  To share your story, please forward it to Tabatha Bowers, Professional Advocacy Chair at tbowers@rogers.com To date, we have had three submissions, two of which have been published.
2.  Linkage with RNAO:  We are actively pursuing an invitation to this year's Elder Think Tank, which will be held prior to the RNAO Elder Care Conference in September in Markham.

Future actions under consideration:

1.  The development of a book highlighting gerontological nursing.  The goal of this book is to dispel the long-held belief that gerontological nursing is basic nursing care, and to promote gerontological nursing as the highly specialized area that it is.  If you would like to assist in developing this book, or would like to submit a story regarding a triumphant moment, an inspirational moment, or a challenge you may have faced, please contact Tabatha Bowers
2.  The development of a poster campaign to run in June 2007 during Seniors' Month to promote gerontological nursing.  The membership is asked to please submit suggestions for themes or a poster for consideration to Tabatha Bowers.

Chapter Level Events:

In future, there will be information posted here to highlight professional advocacy and political action from the various chapters, as we have some very active chapters in this area.  Please check with your local chapter to see what events they may be involved in and how you might become involved!
